Liked the characters but from what I understand of the actual storyline, they took A LOT of liberties.

Also found the "big mutie fight" to somewhat underwhelming, though props to Kelsey Grammer for at least seeming sober during the film.

lol,
True, but from the first they made their own storyline, just used the base concepts, so don't look at it as a deviation from the original storyline, but a whole new concept in the same world and its enjoyable.(IMHO)

A good point, though even given that leeway it still felt phoned in. The new characters were nice, but there wasn't nearly the development in this one that has been in the last two.

Suddenly, everything between Wolverine and Jean Grey is resolved, despite the heavy tension in the last two films?

I hardly believe that what has been built between Magneto and Mystique could also have fallen so quickly by the wayside, and I'm sure that we could have easily had an entire scene devoted solely to Magneto's reaction to being "sterilized".

Kelsey Grammer could have done so much more with his character of Dr. Hank McCoy as well, but he was barely featured for anything more than a new face. Yet another character whose potential depth is nigh unlimited.

For that much, they could have let Anna Paquin do some real acting in agonizing over Rogue's choice for inoculation. Instead, they just give her a a few melodramatic shots, a whining session at Iceman, and a token conversation with Logan before sending her off on her way to make a choice THAT IS PIVOTAL TO THE FILM'S PLOT!

Between the reigning in of actors both seasoned and untested as well as the outright dismissal of character history and progression both primary and secondary to the film's central storyline, and the unwillingness to expand upon new characters who have rich backlogs of their own story points unrelated to the main plot, this movie fails to live up to its own previously established standards. The new characters, unexpected deaths, and flashy special effects were used to hide the fact that they were neutering a storyline that should have run at least another two films if it were to be properly fleshed out.

In short this movie made so many assumptions and blatant attempts to hide its shortcomings behind jazzy special effects shots that, as an informed audience member, I felt insulted. Now, my suspension of disbelief is strong and has withstood worse, but only when films at least attempt to explain or work around their faults and holes. Like "The Juggernaut", once this movie picks up speed it just plows through every movie convention it can find and drags you along for the ride through nothing more than the vacuous space left in its wake.
